Season 1

For this episode we will be looking back at some of our favourite moments from Season 1, reveal what went into the recording of each episode, and hit you with some exciting announcements in anticipation of Season 2.

But first, we think it’s high time we properly introduce ourselves.

While almost everyone who knows our host calls her Texx, her real name is Tecla Ciolfi and she’s been a part of the South African music industry for the last 10 years – namely as the founder of Texx and the City, a music website that spotlights the best underground & unsigned musicians in South Africa across multiple genres.

Texx Talks was born when Texx and producer, Jonathan Inggs, got together at Van Hunks in Cape Town for a day drinking session. Cut to another day drinking session a few months later at The Royale in Joburg, and Texx Talks was born.

Just like Texx and The City, the aim behind this podcast is to spotlight the multiple genres that make South Africa, and to a larger extent, Africa, such a rich musical melting pot.

Together with our second producer Matthew Loots, who edits Texx Talks to perfection, and Al Clapper who assists in doing research on each interview subject, we really could not have asked for a better team.

Tresor Riziki is arguably the biggest pop star in South Africa at the moment, having worked tirelessly on building his musical career from the moment he arrived in Durban from Goma in the DRC.

Renowned for his distinct sound, his songs reflect a peregrine of life shared by so many who live in Africa, but few are able to express their experiences in a way that he does – capturing an ear so universally and directly.

From being warmly welcomed by Durban’s music scene when he arrived in SA, to striking lifelong creative partnerships and friendships with rapper AKA and singer-songwriter Matthew Field (Beatenberg), to penning historic deals with Universal Media Publishing, Tresor’s transition from pop star to global entrepreneur is truly inspirational.

Alice Phoebe Lou is a proudly independent singer-songwriter whose creative confidence shines courtesy of her captivating vocals and stripped back compositions.

Having developed her bluesy, folk sound busking on the streets of Berlin, she has caught the ears of a community of music lovers the world over with her honest storytelling and raw, beautiful voice.

Ryan Murgatroyd is a bonafide legend of South Africa’s electronic music scene.

Rising to prominence in his solo capacity, but also as one half of the DJ duo Crazy White Boy who consistently churned out massive chart and dance floor bangers in the 2000s, Ryan has played some of the world’s biggest clubs and stages.

The music of BCUC (Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness) resonates strongly with a sense of spirituality and deals with the past, the present and the future of the people of South Africa.

Striving to rectify western assumptions and shine a light on post-apartheid South Africa from a contemporary perspective, there are few SA bands like BCUC, who draw deep inspiration from indigenous music, infusing them with raps and a very raw rock ‘n’ roll attitude.

And there are even fewer who can claim to have played Glastonbury, Roskilde and Afropunk and recorded with living legends Saul Williams and Femi Kuti.

Dave Scott, aka The Kiffness, can be best described as a South African meme and music culture tastemaker. From his roots remixing his school song, to taking on the SABC with his #NoPayNoPlay campaign, to creating a mashup that was incorporated into Fatboy Slim’s set – Dave has never shied away from being quirky or controversial.

His development as an artist can only be described as DIY, having essentially turned his band into a brand, while always being fully open to sharing his hard-earned industry insights with the music community at large.

Zolani Mahola can be best described as a South African national treasure. Over her 17 years in the industry, she established herself as the frontwoman of award-winning Afro-pop group Freshlyground, before reinventing herself under her solo moniker as “The One Who Sings” at the end of 2019.

From getting deported by authoritarian regimes to feeling your lowest whilst on top, Zolani’s journey is one one of boundless optimism and heartfelt glimpses into the mind of this talented storyteller.
