So sit back and enjoy Texx’s Top 5 moments from across this season, from hanging out with SA’s godfather of punk, to shooting the breeze with one of New Orleans rising soul stars, to reliving historical times with one of South Africa’s premiere DJs.

In light of her five, yes FIVE SAMA nods, we thought we would bring back this gem from our vault.

Msaki is a singer and songwriter whose deeply soulful vocals and lyrics carry profound messages that resonate with everyone who’s had the pleasure of hearing her sing and seeing her perform.

This Eastern Cape-born musician has created songs that combine soulful folk with symphonic movements, Xhosa lyrics with African poly-rhythms and her raw delivery disrupts your senses as she sings of love and loss, and home and hope.

From speaking about being an advocate for change, to her collaboration on some of SA’s most beloved house tracks, Msaki is undeniably one of the most important modern voices to put thought to bars.

PJ Morton is a four-time Grammy Award winner.

But that’s not all you need to know about our guest this time around. This New Orleans born and bred soul artist has just released his biggest and best album called “Watch The Sun” on his own label, Morton Records

Over the course of 11 songs, all expertly written and produced, that deal with the complexities of love in all its forms, he marks the next chapter in a remarkable career that continues to bridge style traditions and generations.

From his humble beginnings as the son of a preacher man, to coming to terms with his identity, to feeling the presence of Stevie Wonder on an airplane near the WC, PJ Morton is an exemplar of the exceptional.

Zulu Mkhathini is a creative polymath who really has done it all and makes anyone feel like they could do more with their lives and their time, to be honest.

With a striking latest album – that took four years to complete and was then subjected to a bit of a rocky release because of Covid-19 – he navigated an unorthodox release campaign like a pro and continues to reinforce the project by telling a very personal story.

From disappointing loved ones and then making good with an ethic that screams “do better”, Zulu is walking the road that few even know how to find, let alone wear it thin.

Outro Song: Asambe  – Apple Music

Uniform feat. Tira – Apple Music

DJ Lag is frequently described as a gqom pioneer – helping shape and usher the drum-heavy sound to the forefront of South Africa’s dance music scene.

Always looking to break new ground, his latest album employs a broader palette fusing amapiano, Afro-house, and Afro-tech – and slowing down a few tracks that he’s seeing as a bit of shift in the genre, calling it gqom 2.0.

From hearing his music in a taxi for the first time, to that first trip up to Johannesburg, to touring the world, DJ Lag seems to have taken it all in his stride, one giant leap at a time.

DJ Ready D is a bona fide hip hop legend and one of the longest-serving scratch artists in South Africa.

As an integral member of Prophets Of Da City, a group who are widely credited as having SA’s first rap release, he built a thriving career over the years as a hip hop DJ and turntablist and radio & TV Presenter – while also working closely with communities to develop youth programmes for educational upliftment.

This is of course Deon Daniels, better known to all of us as DJ Ready D.

For our 100th episode and the start of Africa Month we chat to a South African rap powerhouse whose lyrical flexing is world class, a lady who has unapologetically blazed her own trail, preaching empowerment and taking names on whichever stage she steps.

From the moment the country heard her hot, on point rhymes it was very clear that a new kind of hip hop star was born and her career has been equally as interesting to follow as it unfolds.

From her humble hard working roots through to finding her own form of spiritual enlightenment that very often sought to buck the status quo, Gigi Lamayne is blazing a trail that you best don fire protection to keep up with.

Outro Song: Mashonisa feat. Busiswah x Makhadzi – Apple Music

As the frontman of FUZIGISH, one of the best ska punk bands South Africa has ever seen, Jay Bones captained a chaotic ship that tore towns and stages apart wherever they toured and performed.

Known for their epic, energetic live shows where anything goes, their drunken, middle fingers anthems like “Secret Police”, “Little Bird”, “Crazy Friends” and countless others are still sung by loyal skankers all these years later.

Here he talks to Texx about their origins, the friends, the fights and the tours that served as a backdrop for Fuzigish’s epic story ahead of their new album drop.
